conductors
It’s easy to say we use copper conductors, but that is simply one fixed variable out of many that make up a conductor.
size
From resistance to skin depth, there are many factors that determine the proper conductor size and utilization. Through careful evaluations, the specific gauge Turnbull Audio employs is non standard. Direct communications with a highly specialized wire drawing company allows Turnbull to dictate the size to the 100th of a millimeter, and that precision has proved to be invaluable for consistency.
geometry
Solid core conductors have the ultimate clarity and phase when at the proper size, but they lack RFI/EMI rejection properties. Turnbull uses the minimum strands quantity of solid copper conductors required to create these rejection properties , individually insulated to form a type of Litz conductor.
Surface Quality
Turnbull uses the latest developments of OCC metal grain elimination. Between the custom dies for drawing, and the environment created to develop a grainless surface quality, Turnbull conductors have the smoothest surface and grain boundaries available.
Directionality
Though these processes are created to avoid wire directionality, it is still possible to hear and measure which direction electricity prefers to travel. This is controlled through the entire process of creating the wire geometry, such that directionality is optimized for every application. This is why all Turnbull Audio cables have directionality noted on the cables.
Purity
Our copper is 5N pure. This is the highest purity that any lab will certify for lengths longer than one foot. Though the processes involved for purifying our conductors can achieve a 6N purity, the large orders over 50,000’ result in the certification of a 5N purity.
Annealing
As important as everything aspect is, annealing is surprisingly high on that list. We found that softer conductors can outperform higher purity and better polished conductors. We triple anneal all of our conductors to guarantee the softest conductor possible.
